Welcome to the fifth post in our series on IB grade boundaries! Please read the first post for an introduction to IB grade boundaries.
Little Geniuses have compiled data from May to Nov to analyse trends in grade boundaries for the three group 5 subjects available. This graph illustrates the average cut-off for a band 7 in studies, SL and HL mathematics.
Mathematics subjects tend to have similar cut-off marks to group 3 humanities and group 4 sciences subjects. The cut-off is highest for Mathematics SL over the three-year period, at The cut-off is lowest for HL Mathematics at 75, due to its difficulty, and the volume of content that must be learnt and understood.
Note that 70 was the average cut-off for physics HL, over the same period: a much lower cut-off for a similarly difficult subject. The average cut-off for group 5 mathematics is similar, at However, the cut-off for mathematics tends to be higher than the cut-off for humanities and sciences subjects. SL Mathematics is still rigorous, and students are exposed to key topics: differentiation, integration and vectors but in less depth.
SL maths is equivalent to HSC 2 unit mathematics. Finally, Mathematics Studies does not provide students with a rigorous understanding of calculus, but instead focuses more attention on geometry, statistics and logic. Mathematics studies is equivalent to HSC general mathematics. Students choosing Mathematics Studies may struggle if their future studies involve mathematics of any nature, for example, actuarial studies often require HL mathematics as a prerequisite.
In other degrees, such as mathematics, science or engineering, this level of mathematics is not required, however you might be at a disadvantage compared to other students, with a stronger mathematics background. The graph above displays the trends in the band 7 cut-off mark over time. Note that there are three exams every calendar year - there is only one time zone in November.
However, this may just be an anomaly. Overall, we can observe less variation in the cut-off for a band 7 in group 5 mathematics subjects compared to group 3 humanities and group 4 sciences subjects. The table below shows the students entered for the May IB exams:. Out of a year group of 60 you would expect on average only 2 students to be good enough to get a 5 and 2 more to get a 6 or 7.
But this is failing to address the overall cause of the problem, i. You can see this failure easily enough by looking at past paper grade boundaries. This is evidence of a bad exam and nothing more. And yet examiners seem to be incapable of doing anything to change this. Hard questions and low grade boundaries simply result in demotivated and disillusioned students who feel like their 2 years slogging through HL has been wasted. Is this the legacy that IB want to achieve?
That students who start the course with enthusiasm and love for the subject get gradually crushed and demoralised? It seems a pretty poor outcome.
The option paper for Calculus also shows the same lamentable failings. How can this be anything other than a failure of the examiners to actually produce a fair test? This bunching up of all grades meant that a slip on one question could cost a student 2 grades. How I got a 43 in the IB - 10 Tips \u0026 Advice
Equally a student getting 28 marks or 34 marks would have got level 4 or 6 respectively. This is a terrible test! Small mistakes are massively penalised and all students leave the exam room feeling like they have failed. The examiner mindset especially in evidence in the Calculus option unit is to purposely avoid all topics that they think the students will be able to do, and instead to find parts of the syllabus that they expect to catch students out on.
On P1 and P2 where examiners have marks to play with, these exams are a good reflection of the syllabus content. There also seems to be the desire to make the Calculus option a university undergraduate level maths paper — as though there is a pride to be taken in making it as difficult and rigorous as possible. From IB HL will be killed off in its current form — as a direct result of the low numbers and persistent negative feedback from both students and teachers.
And this in itself is a huge shame — there is a definite need for 3 levels of maths at IB, catering for very different student needs. However despite the obvious reform being to stop making the HL papers so unnecessarily hard, the entire IB maths offering is going to be hugely dumbed down instead. What a terrible legacy. A note for teachers: Before using these for your own students, you might want to try giving a few test runs first. For example, add up what you think a 4 or a C should be worth using a Paper 1 essay rubric and see if it matches with my boundaries. While the above boundaries are using the old curriculum as a guide, I will point out that my Paper 3 boundaries are purely my own invention.
You will see the boundaries appear harder, but this is because I think Paper 3 is a lot easier than other papers especially Question 1a-c. As the actual grade boundaries reflect student preparation for the complete syllabus our school is contemplating some modified versions.
I am new to the IB curriculum and am still working my way around the assessment. I was reading the assessment document on the IB website and there is the concept of scaled scores. The scores which you have given in the tables, are not scaled right? When do we use the scaled marks? Dear Travis, I have a question regarding the assessment. We then calculate all the percentages for all the papers and refer to the table which is on the extreme right side to get a final grade out of What is the purpose of individual grades for each paper which use raw marks example- 22?
Are they being used somewhere in tabulation of final score? I might not have understood your question properly, though. I am new to IB assessment and was looking for some help in assessment. Now one thing is that this is converted to a number grade on the basis of this raw score. I am looking at table 2 in the image under SL section put up by you. So here, I simply give a number grade on the basis of the raw score 40? That is my first question.
Then the question on weighting. I am trying to understand the concept of weighting in IB assessment. Similarly, I get the percentage score for every paper 1,2 and IA. I then add them all and move to the 4th table given above where grades are given for percentage scores Is that how we arrive at one composite score in Psychology SL? I am basically confused with how to use weightages and give a total number grade of when we have an exam for paper 1, paper 2 and IA. What exactly do we do once we have the raw scores for each paper?
I am finding it a bit difficult and it would be great if you could help. The answer to your first question, is yes. You simply give the number grade that corresponds to the raw score. You have to multiply 40 by the scaling factor 1.
Total those three together: I am absolutely clear with the assessment now. I really appreciate the detailed explanation. It is very helpful for beginners like me in IB Psychology. I've created these grade boundaries for IB Psychology to use with my own classes and thought I'd share them in case they're helpful for you.International Baccalaureate IB.

Welcome to the sixth and final post in our series on I B grade boundaries!
Please read the first post for an introduction to IB grade boundaries. Little Geniuses have compiled data from May to Nov to analyse trends in grade boundaries for the wide range of group 6 subjects available.
This graph illustrates the average cut-off for a band 7 in a variety of commonly-taken arts subjects: Dance, Film, Music, Theatre, and Visual Arts. Arts subjects tend to have slightly higher cut-off marks than group 3 humanities and group 4 sciences subjects.
The cut-off is lowest for theatre at 74 for SL and 77 for HL. The average cut-off for group 6 Arts subjects is similar to the cut-off for group 1 English subjects and lower than that of the group 2 languages subjects.
The graph above displays the trends in the band 7 cut-off mark over time. Note that there are three exams every calendar year - there is only one time zone in November. Physics SL also fluctuates between 65 and 72 over the 3-year period. Studying an arts subject is not mandatory — instead you can choose an additional subject from groupsi.
A few factors should go into making that decision: most importantly, your passions and skills. In addition, it can help to consider grade boundaries. So, a subject with a high cut-off mark suggests there is a limited amount of syllabus content, and that most students have been able to refine their approaches to assessment, driving the IB to increase the threshold for higher bands.
Note of course that there is significant variation between subjects within these groups. Please contact Little Geniuses if you need help choosing the group 6 subject that is ideal for you.
